In this episode of UnMelanated, Dr. Dara unpacked what it really means to step into leadership—especially when service alone isn’t enough. Dr. Airic Hughes joins us to explore the moments when “staying in your lane” becomes a disservice to yourself and your community. We dig into the tensions between individual and collective expectations, and the invisible battles of you vs. community, you vs. institution, and even you vs. you.
The conversation also tackles common barriers to leadership: feeling unqualified, inexperienced, financially limited, or simply lacking role models. Dr. Hughes reframes these doubts and offers insight into why stepping up isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present. A focused, honest discussion on what holds us back, what calls us forward, and how to keep the main thing the main thing. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
